Per an article published by the Harvard Business Review, the data scientist is just that…sexy.
But what exactly is a data scientist? To answer that first look at what the gathering/analyzing of data can accomplish. Creative mining of related data can reveal amazingly valuable information. It can target marketing campaigns to grow revenues, cut costs, improve customer service or make predictions. The potential is limited only by the creative mind of the person doing the analyzing.
The data scientist is not specialized in one field alone. S/he has a vast overlapping of many disciplines. Recent programs have emerged as certification in the field whether they are producing talented data miners remains unstudied and thus unproven.
Data scientists with a track record of brilliance generally have a math background, statistics knowledge, programming skills and some traditional research history. These contributing talents are enhanced by a curious mind and an intuitive gene for putting things together in an abstract way to create representational results.
If you fit into this mold, the world is your job-market oyster. If you are searching to employ one of these rare creatures, you have your work cut out for you.
